Children Formal Education Grades 1 through 10
Faith Formation for Youth and Families at St. Thomas/St. Dorothy inspires multiple layers of learning and involvement to instill a lifelong commitment to our Catholic faith. Grades 1 through 6 follow a program through Loyola Press as its foundation. Grades 7 and 8 utilize a beginning discussion based program through Our Sunday Visitor and grades 9 and 10 utilize several educational enhancements which may vary by topic but is also discussion based and designed for Confirmation Preparation.
The Catholic Community of Wilmington and South Tewksbury is continuously updating methods, tools and vehicles to give the youth of our parish a solid understanding and practice of their Faith. We insert many methods of learning techniques to expose the children to various learning styles and reinforce by utilization of hands on activities, video, song, verbal discussion and presentation. We encourage families to become involved in any way best suited for their schedules.
Grades 1 through 6 meet on a weekly basis for one hour.
Grades 7 and 8 meet 11 times for 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Grades 9 and 10 meet 10 times for 1 hour and a half.
Our grade level calendars will have the topic of study listed for each week. We encourage parents to ask their children about what they learned and encourage conversation with your children about their experience. Please remember you are the primary educators of their faith. Please see “Lesson Schedule” for details.
All grades with the exception of grade 2 have multiple days and/or times to select from for Faith Formation Class times. We keep grade 2 as a group, due to the importance of the children being comfortable and understanding the two Sacraments they receive that year. The children receive Reconciliation as well as their First Communion. Our goal is to make this experience as special as we are able and to ensure the children understand what these two very important Sacraments mean in their lives.
Home School is available for grades 1,3,4,5,6,7,8. Home school is not available for grades 2,9 and 10 due to the preparation necessary for the upcoming Sacraments. We provide a monthly calendar with check in and return dates. We do want our home school students to be a part of our program, so we do have a few classes that the child is expected to attend. There is flexibility to accommodate the child’s schedule for those classes.
